Let's call it a holiday season so as not to exclude any one on the list. In addition to Merry Christmas there are a number of special days one may celebrate- Solstice, New Year, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and many others. Celebrating the coming in of the light and a new year, whether it is Christ or the other guy, is a higher reality that encompasses love and light in all forms.
Habit 1: You create the Joy. There is no season, no reason and no pleasin that can bring you contentment, you create it within you and radiate it outward. If you are waiting for the magical gift or person to arrive that will make you happy, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Or even the reverse, thinking being with a certain person, or not receiving a certain gift will make you sad is another illusion. The external environment is created by you internally. You manifest your destiny with your beliefs and thoughts. Create joy within you by trusting the universe is a loving place and understanding all is being done for your learning. All is done for you not to you! With this mind and heart set, you are thankful for your surroundings, allowing your light to shine in any room. "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." Eleanor Roosevelt
Habit 2: Feed your Body. Why does it have to be the season of cakes, cookies and chocolate? If you fill your homes with these things, you will eat it. Sugars not only depletes your immune system and feed cancer cells in your body but they rob your body of energy. Alcohol, dairy, wheat, sugar and shellfish are highly inflammatory foods that will give you a sensation of being "hung over", put extra pounds on your hips and make you feel achy all over. Trade in the second glass of wine for lemon water. Stock your cupboards with organic fresh vegetable trays, healthy baked goods, fruits, nuts and seeds of all kinds. Tis the season to make it specially delicious.
Habit 3: Exercise. One Christmas Day, I was out for a jog and one of my neighbors half jokingly said, "don't you take Christmas Day off ?" I had to imagine for a moment to understand what he meant. I was thinking how can he think I'm treating patients today when he sees me out running. Finally, it clicked, he thought jogging was work for me! I responded, " I love it so it's a great gift to me, from me". Movement increases circulation that feeds and detoxifies your cells, improves your mood and enhances your energy. Find a movement exercise that you enjoy. Whether it is skiing, swimming, sex, yoga, dance, walking, weight lifting or lawn bowling, just love it and move with it!
Habit 4: Gratitude. That which you are grateful for, grows. With such turmoil in the world, remember to Thank God (or to whom ever it is you credit with the beauty of life and creation). Be grateful for the air you breathe, the food you have, the home that provides shelter, the family and friends with whom you are sharing space, your successes and failures (both teach different lessons), and be grateful for YOU. Give thanks for the beautiful person who you are.
Habit 5: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Challenge yourself to be as simple as possible. If you exchange gifts, make it yourself, create an unusual wrapping or buy from a local business. Protect our environment using less paper, less plastic and keep our money and resources with local business who will care about people and pollution as much as profits.
Habit 6: Judge your Judgments. What we judge and are most critical about in others, is what we haven't loved within ourselves. We are all doing the best with what we know, have and value. Family members are like a box of chocolates, each has a different center. If you are not the nut, then someone else has to be :) "If you think you're enlightened go spend a week with your family." Ram Dass
Habit 7: Double your Love. Know that true love is the synthesis of opposites. Opposite emotions, opposite peoples, opposite places and opposite events. This yin/yang holistic philosophy is what helps you understand the lie of happy. You can't have happy without sad, you can't have health without sickness, you can't have rich without poor, you can't have a positive without a negative- trying to just have one without the other is a fantasy that creates depression. Know your Christmas will be merry and gloomy at the same time :) See where you have the pairs of opposites to remain balanced and give up "happy" for love. "Love is simultaneous and synchronous pairing of opposites." John Demartini
From my family to yours.....
May your joy dance with sorrow as you find Love in the Heart of Christmas.
Love and Blessing,
